Advanced Photonics and Advanced Photonics Nexus welcome submissions to a joint theme issue on artificial intelligence (AI) and photonics. In recent years, we have witnessed the dramatic development of novel and breathtaking technologies in the field of AI. AI significantly enhances the capabilities of photonic technology, particularly in the way of solving inverse problems in diverse fields ranging from optical sensing and imaging to optical design. Moreover, photonic technologies also benefit AI by offering multiple degrees of freedom to accelerate the laborious process of matrix computation, which is an essential part of deep neural networks. Therefore, we feel obliged to organize a theme issue to highlight the basic principles, advanced techniques, and applications of photonics with AI. Topics in this theme issue include but are not limited to:

  • Learning-based computational sensing and imaging
  • Learning-based optical metrology
  • Learning-based optical design
  • Optical neural networks
  • Optical computing
  • Reservoir computing
  • Optical Ising machine

All papers will undergo standard peer-review processes. Manuscripts should be submitted according to the journal guidelines. A cover letter indicating that the submission is intended for this theme issue should be included. Papers are published as soon as they are accepted for publication, and final proofs are approved. NOTE: Submissions to Advanced Photonics are by invitation only.
